Die kinders agter Kerskind se storieThe children behind the Kerskind story
Na jare in Engeland het ons die voorreg gehad om terug te trek na waar ons harte lê in die Boland. Ons was so opgewonde om ons Brits-gebore kinders terug te bring en hulle hier in ons eie taal, kultuur en mooiste land met sy lekkerste mense groot te maak.
Ons was van die begin af baie bewus oor hoe bevoorreg ons kinders grootword en het ook besef dat hulle nie in Engeland met soveel ongelykheid gekonfronteer was soos hier, waar dit alledaags en rondom ons is nie.
Klara en Sophia het beide klein hartjies en ek het vinnig besef hulle sien baie meer raak as wat ons dink. Een middag ná ’n ete by Gino’s stap Klara uit met haar oorskietpizza en sien ’n man wat in die reën in die dromme grawe op soek na iets om te eet. Die klein lyfie het nie twee keer gedink om te hardloop en haar pizza vir hom te gee nie.
Dit ontstel hulle vreeslik as ons by ’n robot staan en ons het nie kontant om vir bedelaars te gee nie, of as ons met versnaperings in die kar sit, sal hulle altyd sê: “Mamma, daai oom is honger of dors, gee dit vir hom.”
Ek het besef dat daar ’n geleentheid is vir hulle om te leer hoe om terug te gee, en terselfdertyd ’n geleentheid om daardie sagte, empatiese kant van hulle te koester en te laat groei.
Ná ’n gesels met Klara was Kerskind gebore, met die hoop dat elke kind se klein of groot goeie daad ’n kettingreaksie van goeie dade in Suid-Afrika sal hê, en dat ons saam, maak nie saak hoe klein of groot nie, sal werk aan die verskil wat ons so graag in ons samelewing wil sien in hierdie land waar ons so bevoorreg is om te woon.
Kerskind-aktiwiteite is daar om kinders te laat dink, maar terselfdertyd hulle net te laat kind wees en hulle somerkersfeestyd onder die Afrika-son te geniet, en natuurlik ook die mooiste herinneringe te bou.
Klara en Sophia se Kerskind-wens is dat die maatjies in Suid-Afrika saam met hulle in 2026 by 10 000 goeie dade kan uitkom, en wie weet, dalk bereik ons volgende jaar 20 000. Ouers kan elke klein of groot daad registreer en deel, en daar is geen limiet op die hoeveelheid goeie dade wat per kind getel kan word nie.

After years in England, we finally came home to the Boland, where our hearts have always been. We couldn’t wait to watch our two British-born girls grow up in our language and our culture, in the most beautiful country with the loveliest people.
We knew how lucky they were. In England they’d never really seen the kind of need that’s part of everyday life here. Here they see it all the time.
And they see more than we think. Klara and Sophia have the softest little hearts. One rainy afternoon we came out of Gino’s, Klara holding her leftover pizza, and she spotted a man searching through the bins for something to eat. Before I could say anything, she was off, running across in the rain to give him her pizza.
When we stop at a traffic light and there’s no cash to give, they’re properly upset about it. If there are snacks in the car, a little voice from the back seat always says, “Mummy, that man is hungry. Give it to him.”
Watching them, I knew I wanted to help them learn how to give back properly, and to look after that gentle, caring part of them so it keeps growing.
Kerskind started with a chat with Klara. We hope every child’s act of kindness, however small, sets off another one, and another, until kindness spreads right across South Africa. Bit by bit, together, we can help make the difference we all want to see in this country we’re so lucky to call home.
The activities in Kerskind give children something to think about, but mostly they let children be children: enjoying a summer Christmas under the African sun and making memories they’ll keep forever.
Klara and Sophia have a Kerskind wish. They’d love children all over South Africa to join them in reaching 10 000 acts of kindness in 2026. And who knows, maybe next year it’ll be 20 000! Parents can register and share every act of kindness, big or small, and there’s no limit to how many each child can count.
